History Of Pop

1982 #1

In 1982 John Farnham joined Little River Band replacing lead vocalist Glenn Shorrock.  The past 9 years had been a lean period for Farnham with only his revival of Help making the national top 10.  4 years later his career would take off in an even bigger way with the release of the album Whispering Jack.

The Academy Award winning film Chariots Of Fire was not only a box-office hit but the soundtrack music by Greek-born musician Vangelis resulted in one of the year's best selling albums.  Talking of pictures - the Australian 6-man group Moving Pictures had a best seller with What About Me.  It also made its way into the US Top 40.

However it was another local band who really took America by storm.  Men At Work's album Business As Usual sold over 4 million copies and spent an amazing 15 weeks at No 1 on the US album chart.  And even though most Americans had no idea what ‘vegemite’ was it didn't stop them from buying Down Under which made No 1 in the US and of course No 1 - in the land where "women glow and men chunder".
