1. COMMONWEALTH GAMES took place in Melbourne. Australia finished on top of the medal tally for the fifth consecutive time and won a record 221 medals (84 gold, 69 silver and 68 bronze).

2. TOM JONES became officially Sir Tom and a Knight Bachelor.

3. PAYPHONE local calls in Australia increased from 40 cents to 50 cents. 

4. RICKY PONTING became the first Australian to score 100 runs in his 100th Test.  He also became the first ever Test player to score a century in each innings of his 100th Test match.

6. CD sales were reported to be very low.  (e.g. Superfly’s Let’s Get Down, sold only 63 copies in the whole of Australia – and yet made the Australian Top 100 singles chart.)

7. LEIF GARRETT, ‘70s US teen idol, was charged with possessing heroin and fare evasion. 

8. KOBE BRYANT (LA Lakers) scored 81 points, the second most in America’s NBA history.

9. BERNARD FANNING won ARIA awards for Album of the Year Tea and Sympathy and Best Male Artist.

10. GINA RINEHART, daughter of the late mining magnate Lang Hancock, was named by BRW (Business Review Weekly) as Australia’s first female billionaire.

11. THE CHASER'S WAR ON EVERYTHING debuted on ABC TV.

12. TROY CASSAR-DALEY won a Golden Guitar for Male Vocalist of the Year.  SARA STORER won for Female Vocalist.  JOHN WILLIAMSON won for Album of the Year (Chandelier of Stars).  KASEY CHAMBERS won for Single of the Year (Pony).

13. JOHN LAWS was the year’s top earning radio broadcaster with an income of $14 million. 

14. ALLISON DURBIN, 54 year old NZ born Australian singer, was charged with trafficking, cultivating and possessing cannabis.

15. ROGER FEDERER won his 7th Grand Slam tennis title winning the Australian Open. 

16. EDDIE McGUIRE was appointed CEO of the Nine Network.

17. U2 won five Grammy awards including Album of the Year, Song of the Year (Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own).  GREEN DAY won for Record of the Year – Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

18. Queensland BULLS defeated the Victoria Bushrangers to win the Pura Cup.

19. GARY GLITTER was sentenced to 3 years in jail for molesting two young Vietnamese girls.

20. BILL GATES was named as world’s richest person with wealth estimated at $50 billion.  JAMES PACKER was named as Australia’s richest person with $5 billion.
