Wayne Wilson

Radio TAB has announced the decision by leading Queensland race caller Wayne Wilson to retire from race broadcasting. Graham Kemp General Manager of the Radio TAB network said that Wayne had decided to stand down from his position as broadcaster and as such ends a 40 year career that has seen him achieve many milestones.  Wilson started broadcasting in 1960 in Gladstone before beginning his professional career with 4BC in 1969.  Wayne said “There is no right time to walk away from something you love doing but there are other things in life, like family, that I want to devote more time to. I’m sure my professional life will still revolve around racing but on a reduced level”.  Wayne’s last call will be August 7,  the 41st anniversary of commencing race calling in Brisbane.

David Fowler has now been promoted to the position of chief racing commentator following the announcement of  Wilson’s retirement.  “David has been understudy to Wayne for the past 11 years and we are delighted he has accepted the position,” Graham Kemp, general manager of the Radio TAB network said. Apart from the understudy role, Fowler has been the station’s chief harness racing broadcaster since 1992.  “Race broadcasting in Queensland, like all states, has a proud tradition and to take the mantle from Wayne Wilson  is a wonderful privilege. It’s a boyhood dream realised,” Fowler said. “Wayne leaves a great legacy in that he truly modernised broadcasting in the eighties and nineties,” he added.  Fowler will conclude his regular harness racing commitments at the end of Albion Park’s July Winter Carnival and Chris Barsby will assume the chief harness racing commentator’s position in August.
