Chris Smith Tributes

I received a call from a good friend of mine on Friday morning to tell me that Chris had passed away. It’s a very chilling moment when you get a call like this.

I only met Chris in the last 10 years and we have had a few good social outings together over that period. He was always sincere in a grinning way and I think we got along well. I saw Chris only late last year and he was starting to try and change a few health things to live a fuller life. Obviously it didn’t work.

Will miss Chris and his barrage of Emails and calls. He may no longer be with us but we will remember the man and his personality.

R.I.P. Chris

Paul J Turner - Airtime and 4BH presenter

I was very sad to hear the news in Jocks Journal about the sad passing of Chris Smith. Chris used to be a security guard before he got into Radio. When I was doing midnight to dawn at 4BC in Brisbane, I used to chat with him and he would come into the studio and that's where he got his love for Radio. A lovable rogue who had an amazing energy and love for broadcasting. He was doing breakfast at 3KZ in Melbourne but still wanted to get back to Mackay. He was a great bloke and a terrific broadcaster. I am sure many will miss his sense of humour and his kind and cheeky smile, I know I will.

Vale Chris Smith. Tell Paul Hardy we all miss him and now we all miss you too.

Just reading on newmedia about the passing of Chris Smith. I must say it saddened me to hear this awful news. Chris was a well loved larrikin whom I had the pleasure of working with in 1985/86

I remember his quirky sense of humor and how he’d razz us young blokes just starting out in the game. One particular afternoon, he was messing around in the 4MK control room…little did I know he had just activated the “delay” unit.

Of course, its common knowledge one must monitor “off the desk” when the delay is on!  Imagine my surprise when I’d hit the mic button and no words came out…..until 7 sec later.

All I could see was his grin and him waving to me. Here’s to you Chris.

Ray Peters - ARN Melbourne.
