2003 41. THE OFFICE, UK comedy starring Ricky Gervais, began on Australian television. 42. ENGLAND won their first rugby world cup match against Australia winning 25-14. 43. KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS opened their first store in Australia in Penrith, NSW. 44. JOHN ELLIOTT was banned from holding a company directorship for 4 years, fined $15,000 and ordered to pay a share of $1.4 million compensation after being found guilty of breaching corporation’s law by letting Water Wheel Trade while solvent. 45. DEAL OR NO DEAL, hosted by ANDREW O’KEEFE, debuted on Channel 7. 46. CATHY FREEMAN announced her retirement from all athletics stating: "I’ve lost that want, that desire, that passion, that drive." 47. ALDI opened their first supermarkets in Victoria at West Heidelberg and Chirnside Park. 48. DELTA GOODREM made Australian chart history by scoring a 4th No 1 hit single from the one album, Innocent Eyes, when Not Me, Not I made No 1. 49. ANDY RODDICK won the US Open men’s tennis final. 50. VOLKSWAGEN discontinued the famous Volkswagen Beetle car. 51. BRISBANE LIONS won a 3rd consecutive AFL premiership when they defeated Collingwood by 50 points. 52. AUSTRALIAN IDOL premiered on Network Ten. The first winner was GUY SEBASTIAN. Runner-up was SHANNON NOLL. 53. Australian schoolboy Daniel Morcombe disappears from a bus stop on the Sunshine Coast, in Queensland. (At the time of print in 2010 his disappearance had still not been solved.) 54. McDONALDS added healthy foods (fruit, vegetarian burgers etc) to their Australian restaurant menus. 55. FESTIVAL HALL in Brisbane held its final concert. (The hall was torn down to make way for a high rise building.) 56. TROY CASSAR-DALEY won three Golden Guitars at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. He won for Best Male Vocalist, Song of the Year for Born To Survive and another for a duet with Paul Kelly. MELINDA SCHNEIDER won the best female vocalist for The Story Of My Life. 57. A POWER FAILURE in north eastern America resulted in the largest blackout in history, affecting some 50 million people in major US and Canadian cities. 58. PETE SAMPRAS announced his retirement after winning a record 14 Grand Slam titles. His career win-loss was 762-222. Held the No 1 ranking a record 286 weeks. 59. GUY SEBASTIAN had the biggest selling single in Australia in 2003 with Angels Brought Me Here. DELTA GOODREM had the best selling album with Innocent Eyes. 60. ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER became the Governor of California.
